If you were intending to make a turn, and you are not in the turning lane, then you should cancel your signal, and then proceed straight through the intersection to the next available intersection where you can then get into the proper turning lane to make your turn.
If you attempt to make a turn from the wrong lane, you could hit a vehicle going straight through in the lane beside you, for example. |

If you made a signal starting 100 ft before the turn, other drivers can tell what you want to do and accomodate if possible. When it is clear for you to turn and there is no sign or signal saying you can't turn, go ahead and turn. When I see another driver trapped in the wrong lane and signalling to turn, I'll let them cut in if it's safe to do so. That helps everybody. If the turn at that intersection isn't possible, go to the next one where you can legally get back on course and safely do that.
Sometimes the traffic just won't let up and you don't want to get stuck gridlocked in the intersection when the light changes. In California it is illegal to clog the intersection- don't enter it if you cannot clear it.
I love GPS because it tells you when and where to turn to get where you program it to direct you. There are some truly horrible intersections and merges that GPS has saved me from going miles off course. Before I got it, I used to spend a lot of time planning trips with a map, but the maps do not show lanes and traffic signals and signs. |
