What sort of expert thought of speed limiters that work from satellites?

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/4/20081230/tuk-experts-back-car-speed-device-dba1618.html
What happens when there is some one behind that does not have one and suddenly the car in front brakes and the guy who is driving that car has no control over it , it is not only stupid but bloody dangerous

Another pie-brained idea that you would expect from this government.

Here's a couple of Government facts for the "Ooh, isn't speeding dangerous?" brigade -

The safest roads in Britain are our motorways.
They also have the highest average speed.

75% of all road accidents occur at LESS than 30mph.

So, remind again, exactly how is speed dangerous...??

Speeding isn't dangerous - bad driving, at any speed, is.

The technology is already in place in all vehicles with electronic ignition. All it will take is a little bit of re-programming during a vehicle service & no more 'boy racers' - not a bad idea in towns. But in the real world where extra speed is welcomed it would appear to be a retrograde step. Where it would be of use would be in extreme weather conditions to prevent the carnage caused by retards driving too fast for the conditions. A few years ago there was a horrendous pile-up on the M42 near Bromsgrove, Worcestershire with well over 100 vehicles including a loaded petrol tanker crashing in thick fog. The cause? Excessive speed & driving from bright sunlight into thick fog with zero visibility in less than a cars length.

Well said - and I agree.

Sorry, I raised this question (well about speed limiters) about the same time you did.

Bloody nanny society we live in ..... beggars belief.

I think its the EU pushing the agenda here. They have a nice and shiny GPS system they need to foist on Europe, or rather find justification for its expense. And to get it off the ground.

It is nothing to do with road safety, it is control and I bet somewhere down the line, taxes. You control cars speed you can also charge for road usage.

If safety was such an issue then DIY store would be shut.

I also drive an awful lot for a living, speed is not an issue I see. It is complete and utter numptyism of the highest degree. GPS limiter will not deal with the stupid gene.

If you were on the road as often as I am you would not even ask the question. Some sort of limiter is required because some people do not adhere to any rules on the road at all. Have you ever heard of driving at a safe distance being able to stop if car in front slows or stops? Good idea hope it becomes law.

fred k
Maybe it would encourage the slowcoaches to speed up to the limiter!

I expect it would only be a speed limiter, not a braking system.
It is generally accepted that you must not follow too close behind a car. If the driver of the leading car performs an expected or unexpected manoeuvre, it is your fault if you crash into him/her.

its a great idea, i hear they are alos going to put tracker sin cars and immobilisers, so if the police or chasing you they can ust turn off your car. also debt collectors willknow exactly where your car is and they will have the power to turn your car off as well.
i cant wait.

Well when people start driving like they should and drive by the rules of the roads then maybe someday this may not be needed but in the meantime something needs to be done.....
