What speed dose it take to kill a dear?

There is no set speed that it would take to kill it, just a glancing blow from the car would do it. They always seem to run off into the woods and die there.

Yes, deer usually run out from the side of the road and actually hit YOU........
I've had 3 deer run into the sides of my vehicle during the past 10 years.
Remember, there are crumple zones which crush and take the impact. I think these also save many deer from being killed.
One deer's left hip hit and bent my hood (no blood), one deer hit the rear quarter panel of my driver's side and bent in the quarter panel, and walked away. The other deer ran her front knee into my other rear quarter panel. All of them walked away..........for which Im happy. All of these incidents happened just after dark. I always reduce my speed when driving at night by about 10 mph which greatly reduces injuries to myself or wildlife, and also increases my night visibility and reduces my stopping distance as well. Its' all good!
As far as the necessary speed to kill a deer? Well it would depend on where that deer was hit on its body, whether it was thrown through the air and then hit the road again, etc.
Speed might be one factor, but the dynamics of crashes are quite complicated and each one is unique. So, it's not just the speed, but point of impact, and type of injuries sustained which are the important factors, don't you think?

Well, It really depends upon how it was hit, If it was hit directly head on at that speed It was probably in shock and darted into the woods before dieing, But Its nothing really to worry about.

It likely died later from internal injuries. It would have to have been extremely lucky if it did survive.

Usually a roll over the car will kill it, and maybe your "dear" got lucky.

It doesn't take much. However, your mother was very lucky...deer have been known to cause human fatalities in crashes.

I once watched a cop shoot a deer that had been hit by a car. The deer was badly injured and would not have survived. The cop shot the deer once in the head. The cop (who is a friend of mine) was upset about it for days.

The car that hit the deer was demolished...the driver suffered moderate but not life threatening injuries, from the deer coming up over the hood of the car and slamming into the windshield.

Let me add that the driver was traveling at approximately 15 mph on a very curvy road. The deer came out of nowhere.

If you can kill someone going even like 20-30 mph in a car, then you can kill a deer as well.

If it was gone the then that deer walked away.
40 MPH is enough to kill with a solid impact,
but you say the deer rolled over the car.
If you hit it in the air, it might have not taken
a solid hit and survived.

This is a question that really cannot be answered.....because I have see deer get hit at 40 miles per hours and walk away and at the same time I have seen deer just get tapped at 10 miles per hour and die.......
