What the hell happened to my car? (weird)?

This is the strangest thing I've ever seen happening to my car. I parked it in an empty parking lot, facing a wall and away from the street. I get out just to drop something off and I'd be back in seconds, so I just left my keys in and the door open.

I am walking, and next thing I know I see my car rolling back with no driver towards the street. It goes up in the sidewalk as I rush back attempting to stop it. Luckily it stopped by itself without hitting anything, but when I got in, I saw the transmission on Drive!

If I had it on drive when I left the car, it should've gone forwards and hit the wall right in front of the car, but it went backwards, suggesting it was on reverse. But I'd have no reason to have it on reverse as I was getting out.

Weirdest of all, I didn't notice it was on drive when I left the car and it did stop by itself without causing any damage. A man driving by stared at me with a strange look in his face. And I wasn't high. It DID happen.

No, I don't think it was on an incline.
I'll head back there and check try it again. With the driver inside this time.

When your car is off the transmission pump is not pumping fluid to engage the clutch packs. Even if it's in drive or reverse, if you are on an incline it can still roll.

Sounds like it was in neutral & there might have been a slight variation fo the parking lot to get it rolling.

Finding it in drive though when it stopped makes it sound like ghosts, gremlins or demons. WEIRD! I drive a 5 speed manual trans, so not sure about how automatics work. I know mine won't roll if it's in gear, but I always pull the hand brake.

I wonder if there is something wrong with your gear shift. Perhaps the locking pins that hold it in place are worn or malfunctioning. Always put on your parking break though when ever you are parking, even if there is no hill.

When I was in high school, a popular place to go was a place called Acid Hill. (island of O'ahu in Hawai'i) You go up this hill & when you get to the top it was a dead end loop. It seemed relatively flat up there, but looked like it continued to slope uphill.. You turn off your car, put it in neutral with your nose pointing to what seemed like the start of going back down hill. The car would roll backwards... UPHILL. Which is why it was called Acid Hill. Made you feel like you were on drugs! It was the weirdest thing! I took my nieces to show them when they reached high school age, unfortunately, they built houses up there, so it's not there anymore. maybe you guys have an Acid parking Lot! lol!!

Even if in Drive if the car was on a slight incline it would roll backwards. If you were in such a hurry that you would leave your keys in it and the car unlocked than you may not have pushed it to park fully causing it to slip into drive and I'm sure you didn't bother with a parking brake. Im sure it happened whether you were high or not.

it wouldn't go forward with no one hitting the gas. maybe you were on a small slope and it rolled backwards.

"You jumped out of the car so fast you left the gar in Neutral not Park as you thought, Lost Momentum and starting rolling back, Bounced over the Small Divider between the Parking Area and Sidewalk popping back into Drive Stopping the car! OK you were Lucky ;) Slower parking next time.
