What time do u drive at?? steering wheel hand position?

imagine ur steering wheel is a clock what time do u drive at, where on ur wheel r ur hands, i drive at 5 past 9, my mum drives at 8 oclock and my husband seems to drive at whatever time suits him best on that day. as a learner ur meant to hold the wheel at quarter to 3 or 10 past 2, just wanna know if any1 actually does this once they have passed their test

10 and 2 is the old school way of holding the steering wheel. However with todays new air bags, holding the wheel at 10-2 can be dangerous. As the bag deploys, it will thrust your (hard) arms and hands towards your face. The new instructed position in 9 - 3. As the bag deploys, your arms and pushed to the side.

Mostly at ten to two, but to relax your arm muscles occasionally at quarter to three and twenty to four.Try to avoid a straight arm , with minimal elbow bend , as this will increase fatigue in the arms.

About 10 TO 2. For instance after turning right in an Australian roundabout bring your left hand back to about 10 o'clock and click left on your indicator with your right,as you let the wheel slip back through your left hand towards central and you bring your right hand back up to 2 o'clock.
It takes a little practise but it's much better than trying to manipulate the wheel back and not being able to operate the indicator. You'll soon get the feel of the car and be able to exit corners faster than you enter them instead of entering fast and exiting slow like most learners.

Pardon?! You say "as a learner ur meant to hold the wheel at quarter to 3 or 10 past 2"????

OK now I agree with a quarter to 3, but 10 PAST 2???? that's a very odd position to drive and it wold be very hard to reach your indicators with your left hand all the way over there!

You should drive at a position that is comfortable but safe - ie. you can reach your controls safely, and you are able to suddenly steer should you need to - thats why learners are taught to push-pull steer, so their hands are always in a position to be able to steer more or less suddenly - you cant do this if you lean the wheel with one hand!!

Be careful all you drivers with one hand on the wheel - you get a blow out and that wheel will be out your hands in seconds - if not snapping your wrist on the way - bye bye road - hello trees!!!

Oh and the ones who drive with one hand at the top - you do look very cool I have to admit, but how cool will you look when the airbag goes off and you end up punching yourself in the face with your watch imprinting "xeloR" in your forehead!!

Just a thought! :)

To be honest and for your own safety ditch that nonsense advice. If ever there was a candidate for a traffic accident it is someone gripping onto the steering wheel for dear life in the Highway Code prescribed 10 to whatever. I drive with my thumb laced into the wheel and the other hand ready to gesture..LOL..not really but seriously I only use one hand as I find I react a lot quicker that way.. Both hands on the steering is a no no as far as I am concerned and I tend to give two hands on the steering wheel drivers a wide berth!!

littlehobbit
one hand at 3 the other sits on the gear stick i'm afraid!!! i know its naughty!

WelshLad
One hand on the wheel - 12 o'clock
I don't find it conformable having 2 hands on the steering wheel, unless it's roundabout and corners.

10-2 the reason is you have more control of the wheel if it should turn suddenly you have more strength at that time

10 to 2 is the best position, but you as long as you have a hand on each side of the wheel above the centre it is ok.
I always drive in the 10 to 2 or 9 to 2 position, and have done for 45 years. It helps makes sure that you have your hands in the best position to hanle an emergency. Also use the "Push Pull" method of steering when cornering, where neither hand goes past the 12 position, not easy to learn but of great benefit in keeping control.

Usually at 10-2 0r 5-1

The Real ME
When I learnt to drive, I was told to hold the wheel at the "10 to 2" position. I hear now that they are going to change it, but I'm not sure if that's just a rumour!

The majority of my driving will be at the 9 o'clock position. That is with only one hand at the 9 o'clock position. I grew up driving cars and trucks with manual transmissions. Old habits die real hard.

Its supposed to be 10 - 2, but i find 8 - 1 more comfortable for me

10 to two or quarter to three is still used by driving instructors, with no changes in the near future, both hands on the wheel at all times except when changing gears.
