I got my license a year ago. I live in NYC, so driving is especially challenging. The second or third time I drove after getting my license I hit a car while parallel parking: I passed the spot, reversed back to it, forgot I was already in reverse, switched to drive and ended up smacking the passenger door of the car in front of me while trying to park behind him. The guy was in the car, started cursing me out, I panicked and ended up grinding his car a little more before I realized I had to turn my wheel. Embarrassing, stressful and ultimately an expensive error. Since then I've driven only a handful of times and always am stressed/panicky and need someone to walk me through the smallest things. I am ashamed of my inability to conquer my fear. What should I do?

Maybe you should go practice driving somewhere where the traffic isn't as bad, like maybe a small town outside of NYC? have a parent, good friend or whoever take you and just drive around for an hour or however long. It'll help getting out of the crazy traffic in NYC |

Don't panic. What you are experiencing is normal. You need to have gotten right back out on the road, but it is not too late. Get someone in whose driving ability you have confidence to go with you and take a road trip out to where traffic is quieter. Drive around the neighbourhood and every time you see a spot you know is big enough to park in, parallel park into it. This will probably take several weeks, but as you gain confidence, move closer to the big city.
You learned what you needed in the first accident, now you just need to practice. Don't give up and let a little mistake take you out permanently. I had my first accident, similar type but both vehicles were moving, the first time I took out my father's car solo, first solo actually. Haven't repeated that mistake since and it has been over 40 years. You never stop learning driving skills unless you stop driving.
