Assuming you are wearing your seat belt, and assuming the car does not crush your legs so you are stuck there, depending on how open the windows are, the car is going to fill up with water, and you may have a hard time getting the door to open because the water pressure outside is stronger than inside.
If you are of slight enough build to swim out the window, that was rolled down all the way, then great. I guess I would try to open the car door before the car hit the water, because I am too big to swim out the window & depending on which way the car hits, it might slam the door shut again.
I guess the big issue is how long you can hold your breath while exiting the car. |

I just watched a special on TV about this the other day. There are several ways to get out but all might be difficult in a moment of panic. The special said that you have a like a 10 second window of time to open the door immediately when it hits water. If you can't do this you can wait until you car is completely submerged and when the front or rear end starts to go lower than the other, the pressure is neutralized and you can open the door. The best bet is to purchase a window breaker and seat belt cutter- Velcro them to your dash and if this would ever occur- hopefully not, you can cut your seat belt and bust out the window at anytime. I too give my condolences to the people who lost their family members. Hopefully this information will help you if you are ever in need. |

Either open the door right away before it starts to sink, or wait until the water level inside the car is as high as the top of the door. |

Make sure the side windows are rolled down and you got your seatbelt on. Then try to put your head between your legs and kiss your @$$ goodbye. But, if you and the car survive the plunge. Unhook your seatbelt, climb out the side window, and follow the bubbles up to the surface. |

Well,i don't know if you watch it but there is this show called mythbusters and they said that you can use a emergency underwater hammer to smash the window open and escape. |

I would consult discovery channel mythbusters on that. Sad thing that happened. |

depends on how high the bridge is, if its not far, you almost have no chance if the waters deep, water pressure prevents the occupant from opening doors, the impact would jar your brain ,thus making a quick decision impossible, most people dont have the strenght to smash the side windows. best bet is to open the door a little before the vehicle plunges into the water. DONT PANIC is the best advice. |

you would have to ride it out and then wait until the car fills with water before you could open the door to get out, the car has to be pressurized with water before the doors will open. |

Pray. On that note, I also pray for the people in the accident and their families as well. |

don't panic, stay calm, the more you move, the less air you have, so be patient on your escape. If you need air, there should be some on the back of the car. |
