Because of the cost of making a safer car. Everything has to be brought in gradually and cost effectivly

1) Cars would be more expensive to design and create.
2) Most people won't pay more for safer cars.
3) Safer cars are usually heavier causing them to be less fuel efficient. They need higher efficiency to meet govt standards.
4) Auto companies don't benefit by reduce insurance costs.

A good question might be why cars companies don't go into the insurance business? They have a sales force, they have the parts and labor to do repairs, they have a customer base. They already offer financing why not insurance for one stop shopping?

Safety comes at a price. First, it costs more. Second, it adds weight to the car. That usually translates into lower mileage and lower performance, especially in compact cars with 4 cyl engines.

Car manufacturers are straddling the line with consumers who want a cheaper car, faster car, more fuel efficient car.

The Government wants more fuel efficiency and higher crash standards. Those two usually don't go hand-in-hand.

You should realize that there is only so much energy to be had from a gallon of gasoline. Short of splitting the atoms, there will eventually come a point that someone will say, tha-tha-tha-tha-that's all, folks. The trade off with new fuel efficient engines is their complexity with dozens of sensors and emission controls that add substantially to the cost of the vehicle and to any repair costs.

Firecracker .
??????????????

You already have shock absorbing bumpers, crumple zones, safety cages, airbags, seat belts, collision avoidance systems, rear cameras and cars that parallel park themselves.

Everyone seems to forget that safety starts with the operator.
Hardly anyone seems to accept the responsibility of their actions anymore. Especially when it comes to driving.

That's where your insurance costs come from.
Watch an Allstate commercial. Get a discount for being a safe driver.

Use your brain, or your airbag. It's up to you.

If they make safety an option on a car people will not buy it as a whole. So if one company makes certain safety options standard their car will be more expensive than a comparable car. Once the gov't makes it standard everyone falls in line.

Really everything points to the bottom line in business and that the less money that they have to spend is better in their pockets.

Any vehicle can be made safe for the occupants, but then it would be the size (and expense) of an M1A1 Abrams tank. But they are easy to park anywhere you want. Who's gonna argue about where you parked? Except maybe another Abrams driver.

Regulations, they only need to meet government regulations. Why go above and beyond what is required by law?
