First off, you have left hand drive in some countries, and right-hand drive in others. People who sit in the driver seat on the wrong side would get in more accidents, as they will tend to misjudge distances. This would happen until all of the old cars were off the road.
Also, the transition would be very painful. For several years after the switch, you would have people driving on the wrong side of freeways, and running head-on into other cars.
It would be a little cheaper for auto manufacturers, because they would no longer have to make country specific versions of cars. |

Total chaos, plenty of accidents, injuries, and deaths. People have become accustomed to driving on "their" side of the road, whichever that may be. You can't change that overnight and expect everything to flow smoothly.
If any country decided to change (unlikely), they'd have to re-educate every single driver. Right turns, left turns, two-lane highway driving - everyone would have to completely re-learn and change their driving habits. And while they were adjusting to it, the amount of accidents would be incredible.
Things definitely need to be left just the way they are. |
