you wouldn't have a problem, i have a 96 acura and it's automatic. i was going 60mph and i accidentally knudged it into 1st position, didn't shift, it went to second not first because it wouldn't allow it. Because it is electronic and not mechanical (automatic shifter) the computer will not allow the tranny to engage the reverse gear after a few mph. Your car would either stay in gear or go into neurtal. My bet is it will stay in gear. |

On a 2007 vehicle, absolutely nothing would happen, you would hear a "ratcheting" type sound until the car coasted down to a "safe" speed, about 2-3 mph, then it would engage and lock up the drive wheel(s), on the other hand, if you tried it on a 1967 vehicle, it would engage immediately, locking the drive wheel(s), and more than likely catapult you through the windshield, hope this helps.

Can't happen as the shifter won't allow it.
(As what i read in these answers and questions.

It has a safeguard built in. You'll hear serious noise, but otherwise no damage if you correct quickly. |

It would be quite amazing to shift in to reverse by accident.........because you either have to depress a button on a consol shifter or pull the lever toward you and up if a column shift. If you are already driving, both hands SHOULD be on the steering wheel. The only exception would be maybe a manual shift, but hey.........that would be even more difficult to shift by accident.
I think in the newer cars there is a device to prevent this from happening. You hear a loud noise but it doesn't shift.
As a driver, you really need to understand and operate your vehicle as a machine. A car does cost a lot of money and you will get very high mileage out of it if you treat it with respect and the care it deserves.
Make it your business to become familiar with proper shifting techniques (hmmm, do I need to use that little button on the consol shifter all the time?) You need that "button" to shift from Park to Reverse. You don't need it to shift from Reverse to Neutral or Drive. You don't need it to shift from Drive to Neutral. You do need it to shift from Neutral to Reverse or to Park.
There are reasons for this..........
If you are driving along and your vehicle stalls for example, you can try to start it again while it's rolling along by simply pushing the gearshift up to Neutral WITHOUT the use of the button. It won't shift past Neutral that way and accidentally into Reverse. You can then start your car again, pull the gearshift back into Drive WITHOUT the use of the button. Not using that button prevents you from accidentally shifting into Reverse or Park............
Hope that helps.... |

you would have to be really dumb to do it, yes you will most likely blow the transmission
most cars wont allow you shift into reverse with out comeing to a complete stop but if its older maybe you can do it but i wouldnt advise it |

why on earth are you going 100 mph in a freaking automatic? Become a real man and drive a standard... :) |

Your transmission would explode and then you would die a horrible death. Try it. |

you would not only damage your car, but your neck will suffer from whiplash. not a good feeling. |

would your transmission screw up...lol. anyways its impossible |

There are safety sensors and switches that would either shut the car down, or just simply keep it neutral and no let reverse gear engage. |

I did something like that one time. I was driving in 5th gear and downshifted to 1st by accident and the car kept running but when i turned it off and went to start it up it was locked up. |

If your serious stay out from behind the wheel of a car, because your stupid... if your being sarcastic, stay out from behind the keyboard because your stupid. |

budda

the car probably wouldnt let you make the shift but if it happened the gears wouldnt get together because of the different speeds if so you better have the warentee up to date |

Try it, and your car would be more messed up then yourself after the crash. And you'd be pretty dang messed up.
Good luck though! |

IF you could make it go into reverse, it would probably be a pile of parts pretty quickly.
There should be a safety lock-out preventing it from actually shifting into reverse, but what if it doesn't work?
I would suggest you don't try it. |

just make sure you are wearing about a million seat belts then you should be fine
damn....... you'll probably just suffocate then
errrrrr.......... maybe just don't try
but if your really curious just ask the Stig to do it for you |

you can't do that in a new model, in the old models, it would shear off all the teeth in the differential gear |
|

you would break the kunuter vale and everyone would realize that your a dumb ***. |
|

gsschulte

well first it may not even go into reverse you have neutral right there and if your gears are spinning fast enough it might not go in. but if it does it would sound much like a high speed blender with forks in it and then if the front doesnt slam into the ground you would slowly come to a stop. |
|

The transmission has a lock that won't allow you to put he vehicle into reverse at that speed.
But go ahead, give it a try, I'm sure with enough brute force you can overcome the safety mechanism. |

your more than likely going to screw it up real bad,not to mention about wreck in the process, some cars wont go in to gear at that speed, but if it did,you can bet your going to have problems from doing this,if it happened, good luck on it. |

Good luck paying for that new transmission. That kind of antic (accident, yeah, right) won't be covered under any warranty. |

I think your stupid as hell for wanting for mess up a brand new 07... whats wrong with you? |
|

Steve

It would tear up the gears in the transmission and you would eventually coast to a stop with no transmission at all left. |
|

Becky

I think you would screw up the car most deff. |
|

Tapestry6

yes, big time |
|

Robert W

How on Earth would you do that by accident? I doubt it would actually go into reverse, but you'd be buying a new transmission, I'll bet. |
