Would that mean you'd have to ban OnStar too? They have a phone feature as well.
While we're at it, let's ban CB and dispatch radios and those pesky distracting passengers too!

the idea is that a person on a mobile is concentrating on the conversation and not the road. how that differs to someone talking to a passenger i dont really see?? |

Because it distracts from your driving. Some of your attention is dedicated to speaking on the phone, taking away from your attention on the road.
It's stupid i know, its like banning passengers cos they might distract you, hehe. Well thats my take on the issue. |

It has shown in multiple studies that it isn't the holding the phone that is the problem but talking during driving that the real problem. But here in NYC we have a ban on HOLDING the phone not speaking on the phone. In another words if we use the hands free device it is completely legal. Yes, you read it correctly, it is the talking that the problem but we outlaws holding the phone. That just show the IQ of our law makers. That's like saying it is illegal to hold a beer can during driving, but it is OK if we drink out of a straw.

So in reality they SHOULD outlaw using the phone completely during driving. But do you really think that'll happen? Imagine thousands of people in slow traffic jam - having to "pull over" to make a call saying they'll be late. Pull over where!!! |

Its not the hands.... its the mind... if you are talking and listening on a cell phone, even sitting in the back seat, you are not concentrating on driving, and may very well run right through a stop sign or red light... I have been driving a long time, flew helos for 13 years with radios blearing, people screaming etc... but let me tell you, when i get on the cell phone and drive I am just another monkey driving a car.. |
