Whats the best way to get other drivers from driving right up behind you, besides speeding up?

i usually slow down or put my fog lights on,that pisses em off.

Well, said Alberto

Don't speed up. Slow down, gradually. If you can, let them pass.

The theory test for driving licence has this as a question. The correct answer is you should reduce your speed and if possible pull over when it is safe to do so to let the vehicle past.

Reducing your speed will help minimise the chances of an accident if there's an incident or hazard ahead of you. It gives you more time to react, slow and brake and hopefully avoid getting rear ended.

Slow a little and pay extra attention to the road ahead - don't let them divert all your attention as it endangers you too!

Pull over and let him past, if you slam on your brakes you are risking not just your life but other road user's lives including the selfish git up your ***.

Ask yourself if it is really worth putting yourself in that position....after all it is neither your road or his...if he wants to risk his life then let him, at least your conscience will be clear.

Neo has a point. The tailgater is creating a hazardous condition and it is your job to remove the hazard. sometimes changing lanes is the best thing, even if you move to the left. Let the idiot pass and then drive in the lane of your choice. It is usuually a man in an SUV who feels more powerful and more important than you who commits this act of stupidity.

i agree with the others, the slowing down gradually will allow them time to pass you up and not piss them off.

slow down - if you got nicked for speeding "the bloke behind me was too close" is no defence

being a class 1 driver yuo never speed up ,this will antaganise the driver more ,but if you are falling into his way of thinking it make you the aggresive driver aswell instead of being a professional .and keeping your driving under full control at the end of your journey you will feel relaxed , and a better person .rember your a PROFESSIONAL not a idiot

The worst thing you could do is to follow the advice of Bad Drivers: tap brakelights, slam on the brakes, slow down, stay the same speed, etc.

The proper thing to do is to safely move over to the next available lane and let the speeder pass.

The best way is to frequently check your rear view mirror for speeders before they come up right behind you. Bad drivers hardly check their rear mirrors because they just that, bad drivers. Then they never see the speeder until the speeder is driving right behind them, then they respond like bad drivers.
Bad drivers frequently loiter in the passing lane oblivious to all traffic, ahead and behind. Bad drivers are often talking on cellphones, reading, putting on make-up, and even speeding.

A good driver frequently scans the road ahead as well as behind using mirrors. If you check your mirrors every 10-15 secs you will spot the speeder long before they come right up behind you, and do the proper thing, move over. Act like a professional race car driver, scan the entire road in front and in back.

Statistically speaking, all speeders eventually get caught. Bad drivers get caught too, accidents and fights are their penalty. Why risk your life for a few seconds of "king of the road", "I'm in front of you" childishness? Bad drivers need to grow up.

If you are in the left lane, move to the right so they can pass. If you are in the right lane slow down to encourage them to pass. From what I hear they don't have this problem in Germany because the faster car has the right away and people let them by.

When someone is tailgating in the left lane they are trying to communicate with you. The left lane talegatee is just as much of an asss as the talegator.

Don't drive.

I don't think you can, these are just bad drivers who think they are doing nothing wrong.

Just ignore him, he is heading for an early grave anyway.

Lightly tap your brake pedal (so that the brake light comes on) while still accelerating......confuses the hell outta people!

I also going into reverse at a traffic light when the offender stops behind me.....it's schoolboy humour but it keeps me happy!

tow a trailer with a load of slurry in it that will get them to back off

simulate braking by small pressures upon the brake pedal

I am not intimidated by this. let them hit me, as all rear end collisions are the fault of the one in the rear.

Just as long as they don't have their ******* bright lights on, and the stupid subwoofers thumping out some inane non-rhythmic dirge. THEN I get upset.

scokles
hit ur bakes they wont do it again or just pull over n let them past

Robakai
if you have rear fog lights, blip them on and off until they back away. Slow right down to a crawl, unless they are totally nuts they wont crash into you, or lightly touch the brake pedal just enough for the lights to come on. I have done all of these things to stop tail-gaters and I find them effective!

Just slow down, don't speed up as it's something the Police have been known to do in unmarked cars on a slow day to get people driving faster so they can nick them for speeding!

Never stop though, just slow down until they either drop back or overtake.

Don't speed up. Maintain your speed and increase the gap between you and the car in front. That way, even if the car hits the back of you, you won't be forced into the car in front.

I hate it when people do that, I always find that's a good time to wash your windscreen !

notaclue
I have discovered two methods. First of course would be the "brake check" to let them know I'm not in the mood for games!
Secondly, you can adjust your rear view mirror or side view mirror so their head lights reflect back in their windshield making it impossible to stay there! Of course this only applies to night time driving.
If neither of the above is sucessful, I usually slam on the brakes and jump out of the car like a raving maniac just to instill fear in them and they usually will take the next turn to get away from me!

I usually stick to the speed limit and not a single mph above. if they continue to drive up my a*** then I gently tap the break pedal. If that doesn't work I slow down some more.

Spacysam
I slow right down, and do just under the speed limit...if they dont get the idea, i lightly tap the breaks, if they still dont get the idea then i go a little slower....they eventually back off!

A friend of mine put his hazards on but was followed by the driver and was beaten up for his trouble,he got the number gave it to the law but they told him they were unable to prosecute.
They even left it nearly 3 weeks before they came to photo the bruises, all gone then, but his wife took pictures of him immediately.

ArcLight
I don't really have a good realistic answer, but my first thought is aircraft landing lights. that should thoroughly blind them and bake the paint off of the front of their vehicle, # 2 here in Tex-*** many people would resort to a 12 gauge shotgun or 45 acp. that would get them back a foot or two. and possibly get you arrested, but were talking about a state of "ignorance" where right is wrong and wrong is right. YEE HAW BUBBA.

put an old camera (visible) on the parcel shelf pointing backwards and print some police literature from their websites and make sure its visible. I had an old inspectors hat from a fancy dress outfit and once left it on the rear parcel shelf for a motorway journey - every car kept well back and overtook me so timidly. If I experience this now I just slow gently down to about 40mph (on a motorway) or 20mph (in town) and let them overtake on their way to an early grave - then speed back up once they are out of site

The correct procedure is to slow down and let them pass.
You must maintain a the highest levels of safety at all times, do not aggravate others and do not allow yourself to be aggravated. Stay as cool as you can, for everyone`s sake.

Reduce you speed and then let them past you. if the run into the back of you then you can get them done by the police for tail gateing.
