Use a Lincoln head penny. Turn It upside down and insert it into the deepest part of the tread near the center of the tire. If the top of Lincoln's head is visible then it is time to replace the tire. |

When the wear bars start to show.
The bars are approx 3/32" above the base of the grooves in the tread.
Their purpose is to answer this question without having to measure. |

when you are down to about 1/16 to an 1/8 of an inch of tread it is a good idea to replace them |

I like to wait until the rubber is completely worn off and you can see the steel belts on your tires.
Do not think I am joking. You can do this. It will save you a ton of money on tires, if you use your tires that long! |
