When don't paramedics drivers have their sirens on ?

Ok, most everyone that posted is about halfway there with correct answers. Let me go through the top reasons we drive without lights/sirens:
1. We're just driving and not going to an emergency or transporting a patient.
2. We're going to an "emergency" that is not enough of an emergency to require us to go with lights/sirens (stubbed toe, pain in arm x1 week, etc.)
3. We're transporting a patient that we don't feel is sick enough to require lights and sirens (thus risking other drivers safety)
4. We're transporting a routine transfer from hospital to hospital, hospital to nursing home, nursing home to hospital, residence to doctor's office, residence to dialysis, etc. Basically, the patient requires the ambulance due to some reason that allows them not to be safely transported in a wheelchair/car.

Now, let me make very clear that ambulances do NOT transport dead people. By that I mean if they are dead dead, as in we are not going to do an resuscitative measures, we do not transport. The patient remains at the scene and the ME/coroner is called.
If we are transporting a dead person that we are working on, we almost ALWAYS go lights and sirens. There are very, very few instances in which we transport a code without lights and sirens. It's very rare.

If it's not a life threatening case or if the person is dead. There is no reason for the siren then.

Could be transporting a patient from one hospital to another. If the patient is stable or dead they don't have to be in a big hurry and aren't going to put the patient or themselves at any more risk. Say you fell and broke your leg and needed taken to the hospital in an ambulance, so they have you stable and aren't bleeding bad. Well they will take you to the hospital at a normal speed so they don't risk injuring you more from an accident or from upsetting you with the speeding and all. Then you have cases where people are just being taken from one hospital to another. I had to be transported by ambulance to a different hospital the one time because they couldn't do the surgery where I was. I was in totally stable condition and no need for the ambulance to go speeding or be concerned. There is also the chance that the ambulance doesn't even have a patient, that they are simply going back to the dispatch area.

they also could be going grocery shopping .. remember they have to eat too
