When driving in the dark, how far do you have to be before you turn your lights on low? ?

I've always felt that if you can see theirs, they can see yours - so dim them.

In driver's ed they taught us to dim your lights when you can make out that there is two headlights. From far away the two headlights look like the light is coming from one source, as you get closer you can make out that there are two sources the light is coming from. I normally shut off my brights when I first see the other car though.

Sorry don't understand what you're asking... do you mean when to dip your headlights? Immediately to avoid causing problems for the other driver...if you mean when to turn on lights, I would say as soon as it is slightly dark because I find it gets dark very quickly :0) Hope I answered you correctly

When it starts to get dark and you are driving turn your lights on low. As it gets darker put your lights on full. If you are driving in a situation where you need to use your full beams you turn them off as soon as you see another drivers lights in front of you, then turn them back on when the car has passed. You only need to turn your full beams off when you see another driver, if you are driving on a normal night you just leave your full headlights on. Xx

Before what? I'm not sure that I understand your question.

My car has daytime running lights, so the headlights are always on. I turn on the parking lights starting at dusk, or whenever it's dark form the rain.

The law basically states 500ft but basic rule of thumb is once you see on coming head-lites you asap reduce your hi beams to low beams.I only wish everybody on the roads today would all do this simple considerate life saving task.

Agreeing with "Red", you turn the lights on low if you see an oncoming car, so as to prevent glare to that driver. By doing so he doesn't need glare recovery time and this ultimately cuts down the chance of accident.
