debating if its better to take the car/truck out of gear when slipping on ice verses leaving it in gear and leaving power on the drive train

read the question. im not out of controll, spinning or going into the ditch and trying to come out of the ditch. i know the answer to the question. using this as a learning tool.

Do not put it in neutral. Usually when sliding out of control, you won't have time to think or to shift gears. Just let off the gas and worry about steering but if you leave it in gear, you can hit the gas at the correct time to stop spinning. Also if you go into the ditch after spinning and have momentum, you can get on the gas quick to try and keep driving back out before you stop and get stuck. |

Defensive driving skid school - slip it into neutral. You are already skidding and applying or reducing power to the driving wheels will only tend to exacerbate the situation.
You want all four tires to be spinning evenly and freely before attempting to correct out of an uncontrolled skid on ice.
eg. -- We had an ice storm here a few weeks ago and I hit wet ice with a fully loaded school bus and went sliding sideways down the highway for over 600 feet. If I had left the transmission in gear I would not be telling this story today. By not having any power going to the wheel I was able to concentrate on steering out of the skid. The bus did not cross into opposing traffic or hit the shoulder of the road and there was no damage.
At no time was the bus totally out of my control but it was trying very hard to be.
And I never touched the brakes until the bus slowed down, facing the proper direction, and I was able to pull over to the gravel shoulder where there was sufficient traction to stop. |
