When driving why is using cell phone dangerous?

Cause it's a distraction. Actually a better question would be "when driving why ISN'T using a cell phone dangerous?"

Because the driver is paying attention to the conversation and not to the road. Also the driver might only be using one hand to hold the steering wheel. Holding the phone to their head means they're not looking from side to side as much, checking their side windows and their mirrors.

It's a distraction.

I was riding my bike in a parking lot, and this guy talking on a cell phone cut right in front of me, narrowly missing. I followed him to his parking space to inform him of the event, to which he was oblivious. If had been a violent person, it could have been dangerous for him.

It causes a distraction and reduces response time in case control of the car was lost. many accidents are due to cell phone usage- be it texting or calling someone.

It distracts you more from driving when you need to be focused at 100 percent.

All the answers above, plus, in most countries it is, quite rightly, illegal.

Here are the reasons why driving while talking on the cellphone is dangerous.

*Your attention is inhibited. You are not aware to any traffic changes because of your concentration on the conversation.

*Slowed reaction times. You will notice that many drivers who are using their cellphones while driving may take longer to go at green lights.

*Tendency to speed. When driving while using a cellphone many drivers are unaware of their speed, so they drive at an increased rate. This is risky because it causes more accidents.

Finally, here are statistics that point to why driving and using cellphones is dangerous.

*According to the Human Factors quarterly journal, “Cell phone distraction causes 2,600 deaths and 330,000 injuries in the United States every year” (2005). The same study reported that motorists who are engaged in cell phone conversations while driving are less capable than drunk drivers with blood alcohol levels exceeding .08.

*Each year, 21% of fatal car crashes involving teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19 were the result of cell phone usage. This result has been expected to grow as much as 4% every year.
