I drive tractor trailer for a living. You wouldn't believe the people who think that those of us already on the interstate have to move to the passing lane and let them on. I'm pretty sure I have the right of way, especially if someone's passing me in that left lane.

you DO have the right of way, however you are required to move over to another lane if it IS open to aloow the other car to merge on. however if traffic is heavy the merging car has to take the catious approach.

A - the vehicle on the freeway always has the right-of-way.
B - it is incumbent upon the driver of that vehicle to move over a lane to allow a vehicle to safely enter the freeway, if the next lane is clear, and there is enough time to do so. Obviously you don't dart over a lane for a car that just suddenly appears on the ramp, you have to see him coming, just as he has to see you.
C - I have seen pig-headed drivers who will never move over, and will actually speed up to cut off a person on the on-ramp.
D - I have seen pig-headed drivers on the on-ramp who automatically assume it is their turn, and pull in front of other vehicles whether there is a safe clearance or not, without trying to match speed with the appropriate hole in traffic. I have also seen idiots actually stop at the start of the speed-up lane and wait for a really big hole. I have passed them on the right and eased into a spot in traffic on occasion.
E - Your tractor-trailer, loaded, is a big load. Many people in cars have no idea what you have to do to keep that load from crushing them. You have my sympathy for having to deal with nitwits each and every time you get behind the wheel.
F - Most of this post is not directed at you, but at the average driver on the road who only sees his particular side from the centre of his universe at any moment in time.

As a truck driver as well, I have to laugh as I have heard that same question sarcastically asked on CB many times. The law states the only time you have to move over is for emergancy vehicles on the side, and even if you can't, slow down to about 40mph (Minimum Hwy speed)

and yes from one trucker to another, I know the question is a way to vent steam. As far as the Northeastern states, you're getting into a game of russian roullette..LOL

the thru traffic has the right of way. you are not required to move left but if it can be done safetly you should do it. all semi drivers appreciate when the car moves over for them so they should return the favor. I have found a lot of people do not know how to enter freeway traffic properly the worse ones leave the acceleration lane and enter traffic before they are up to speed<<

those on have the right of way. but i was taught to get over if possible to let on coming traffic on. also taught to get on not stop and wait.
if i can't get over, i will slow down and flash my lights to let the other driver know to get on.
