Many say to check your oil before you even start it.
What is the best result while checking it on the road going many miles away? Should you automatically think it's low when you check it when the engine is warm? I mean, you can't sit there for hours waiting for it to cool if on the road.

The way to get the most accurate measure is to check it before you start your engine in the morning, on a level ground. But if you need to check it while on a trip, the engine doesnt have to be cold, just wait 5-10 minutes after you turn it off to let all the oil drip down into the pan. If you check it right after your turn your car off when all the oil is up in the engine, the dipstick might show low when it actually isnt. |

Here is the thing to understand about checking oil. You can check your oil even if the car has been driven and you have turned it off. What I mean is, that you can check the oil as soon as your car has been turned off. It doesn't matter if the engine is hot or not. The oil can still be checked. Now I do advise you to check your oil level before you go on long trips. You want to make sure that you have enough oil to make it to your destination safely. Never check it when you are driving for long lengths. If you are planning a trip, make sure all of the important aspects including oil levels are inspected thoroughly. You want to make sure your care is in the best condition before going on long trips. |

If you want an accurate reading to be able to tell if you need to add some oil or not, check it before you start the engine. Make sure the car is sitting as level as possible. That way all of the oil is still in the oil pan & none has been pumped into the engine for lubrication.
Your transmission oil level though should be checked after the transmission has been warmed up, with the car in Park & the engine idling to get the most accurate reading of the oil level. |
