When making a right turn you want to always stay in your lane. The reason for this is because if you are making a right turn and someone behind you is in another lane and they are turning in the same direction as you, then you run the risk of hitting the other vehicle or cutting them off causing an accident. Stay in your lane just in case someone is in the other lane when you are turning, then once it is clear proceed to get in the next lane.

If two or more lanes are designated for turning, you must stay in your own lane. That is to prevent sideswiping incidents.

However, if there is only one lane for turning, you can choose any open lane while making your turn. Despite what most people claim, that is not illegal unless it's specifically posted.

Typical scenario: You're approaching an intersection where left turns are prohibited. You must turn right, then make an immediate U-turn. Oftentimes the road is several lanes wide. When making the right turn, you go immediately to the leftmost lane to make the U-turn.

Signs are posted that tell you to do that - make a right, then an immediate U-turn. They wouldn't tell you to do that if it was illegal.

Staying in the right lane and then darting across several lanes of traffic at the last minute is illegal, stupid, and dangerous.

I dunno what the rules are in Nevada, but here when you're making a right turn you stay in the lane closest to you unless there is an obstruction in your way (like a parked car) and then do a lane change into the left lane if that's where you want to be.
