When must my headlights be on?

Here's a simple solution that has worked for me for many years. It's also what I passed on to my kids when they were learning to drive:

When you find yourself wondering whether or not you should turn on your lights, turn them on. If it's dark enough to think about headlights, it's dark enough to use them.

Dusk (sunset) to dawn (sunrise), and in some states whenever it's raining. Personally, I use them any time the weather isn't real sunny - just so no one can say "I didn't see you there!"

from sun set to sun up, that means headlights not parking lights for some reason people are calling pearking lights cruising lights they are not for cruising they are for parking.
some people think it costs more money to run there lights but remember the alternator is always turning when the engine is running, so it does not cost more to run with your lights on, also use headlights during periods of poor visibility,safety cost far less than a accident.

Most States have rules (not always enforced) that state your lights must be on one hour before dusk and one hour after dawn. Also when it is raining.

30 minutes before sunset and 30 minutes after sunrise is how it is in New Hampshire, and use your best judgement in extreme conditions, like if it's easier to see in fog without lights, you don't have to use them.

They should be on when it is just getting dark, and when it is raining.

When you are possibly not able to be seen by other drivers and when it is raining in most states. Most people don't realize that lights aren't to help you see as much as they are for others to see you. If you need lights to see where you are going, you need to slow down.

Where I live you have to have daytime driving lights on and if the car in not equip with them your headlights on all the time you are driving. Headlights and tail lights are to be on from dusk to dawn.

from early in the evening, before it starts to get dark outside, so cars can see you Ok when sun's glare on horizon ... then all nite ... and until sufficiently after sunrise that there's no glare again.
