I turn the wheel towards the curb and put on the emergency break :)
(I left out the whole put it in park bit, and let off the foot brake...I thought that was obvious) |

Automatic: Pull the handbrake, get off the brakes, put the car in park.
Manual: pull up the handbrake, get off the brakes, shut off the engine, put the car in 1st. |

I agree with everybody who said turn the wheel so the car rolls into the curb should the brake fail. Most automatics will not let you take the key out of the ignition if the lever is not in 'Park'. For a manual transmission, put the gear shift lever in reverse if pointed down and in 1st if pointed up. |
