When passing a line of slower vehicles?

When passing a line of slower vehicles?

I wanted to know what you guys thought was the best way to go about passing a line of slower vehicles on a 4 lane highway, with 2 lanes in each direction. I'm a driver that tends to stick right around the speed limit, and when passing slower vehicles I try to carry it out in a timely manner by increasing speed by up to 5 mph. I don't really want to speed up by more than this, because I know of quite a few people who have gotten tickets for 6-10 mph over the speed limit.

When you go to pass a line of say, 4 or 5 slower vehicles that are in the right lane, its kinda hard to carry it out in a timely manner (especially if they are trucks), even with the 5 mph increase in speed. Do you guys think it is ok that it takes a while to pass this many vehicles all at once as long as you try to carry it out in a timely manner with a 5 mph increase, or do you think it is really necessary to speed up by even more? I just wanted to get some second opinions on this matter. Thanks.

If you are doing the speed limit on a four lane highway and you are overtaking slower traffic you merely maintain the speed that you are doing. There is no law that requires you to speed up. And if someone comes up a faster rate of speed the lane is yours. You were there first and you have a perfect right to complete your passing manoeuvre. The car overtaking you above the speed limit will just have to wait until you have passed the other vehicles. No one can force you to break the law just because you are inconveniencing them for a few seconds. They can resume their speed after you have finished and pulled back into the right lanes.

If you're the only person doing the passing, it really doesn't matter very much but if there is a line up of traffic behind that's driving faster than you are, it would be courteous to speed up a little more and then pull back over to the right as soon as you finished passing the last vehicle.

id say speed up to a point where you can pass these vehicles quickly.

if the police are as strict as you say, you may want to pass the vehicles as quick as you can and not stay over the speed limit for a large amount of time.

Speed up to a speed that is necessary to pass quickly, so yes speed up more. You'll want to pass semi trucks quickly and not be in their blind spot (the side of their truck) too long. They can't see you and you never know if a tire would blow out while you're passing. I see tires along the interstate all the time.

Just watch out for cops while passing if they are strict on speeding. Look in your rear view mirror and the medium area or places where a cop could be hiding. Look far ahead.
