When pulling over for an emergency vehicle, which way do you go on a three lane freeway?

I often drive in the middle lane of the freeway. The other night, a police car was behind me and I didn't know which way to go, right or left? Since he was in the left lane, I went right, but what would I do if he was directly behind me?

The Pennsylvania Vechical Code states that you are to pull to the right side of the road (berm) and come to a full stop until the Emergency Unit has passed and it is safe to procede. I truly hate it when I am driving either an Ambulance or a rescue truck and someone pulls to the right and they keep going 60 mph, making harder for me to get around them.

Always go to the right!! I don't care if there is 6 lanes of traffic. Never stop in the road. Get out of the way. MOVE TO THE RIGHT FOR SIRENS AND LIGHTS!

Information on the internet on this subject is conflicting. Sometimes it seems to vary by what country or state you live in. But the best information I've found states that pulling over to the right is usually correct. You might want to check to see what the law is law where you live.

having been an EMT for years i can tell you i really do not care where you go as long as you can do it safely. its a judgement call. as a general rule you go right but if the left lane or shoulder is open then go left if the right is blocked. signal first so i will know what you are planning and go. just don't perform the dreaded panic stop right in front of me when you see the red lights. it helps if you can read the traffic and try to give me as clear a lane as you can but all i really need is for you to move out of my way safely. the rest is details.

You always go to the right, the left side lane is for emergency vehicles!

In general, you should go wherever you can get out of their way safest and fastest. I would recommend to the right b/c the left is the passing lane.

I would go left as long as the shoulders were equal in width.
