When waiting to make a left turn...........?
|
When waiting to make a left turn, and someone is approaching from the left with their right turn signal on, do you usually turn out once you see their signal on or do you wait to actually make sure they turn right, so you don't accidentally cut them off?
I usually wait until I can tell they are actually going to make the right turn that their signal is indicating. You never know if they just don't know they left their blinker on, or if they will change their mind at the last second and speed up, or what. But every time I wait like this and these people have their signal on, when they make their turn right past me they look at me like I have 5 eyes. I always thought this was the right thing to do, to wait and make sure they actually make the turn before you turn out right into their path. Am I right or wrong here?

Well I think you are following the correct principle of, not assuming. You as the driver have the responsibility of making sure it is safe before entering an intersection or before making a movement. If the other driver looks at you in a disgusted way, don't worry about them. You need to be safe. Most drivers get this wrong. They assume that a driver is or is not turning. If you are not sure, the best thing to do is wait and see what the other driver is doing. Also always remember to yield to all on coming traffic. Not assuming a driver is going to turn is better than making a false move and ending up in an accident. When in doubt, stay where you are, be patient, ignore other drivers who may be pushing you on, and be safe. You did the right thing by not assuming anything. |

I never rely on what other road users say they're going to do.
I almost crashed into a car who was signaling but didn't make the turn.
Never presume a driver is going to turn left just because their indicator is on. A lot of drivers do accidentally flick them on without even noticing. |

I usually wait. Now if it is like a 4 way intersection and they will be turning right so they end up beside me I wait and see if they slow down to the point you can see they are turning. |

You are corrected. They could be signalling for a turn somewhere beyond you. |

You are correct. If someone puts a blinker on, I wait to make sure they are slowing down for the turn before pulling out.
It depends on how fast they are coming, their distance, and if it's clear from the other direction. Normally, if I think I have time to pull out and they are slowly coming with their right turn signal on about 2-3 car lengths away, I'll go for it. If they are closer than that, I'll wait to see if they'll turn. Waiting to make sure (and not assuming) is a part of defensive driving. Sometimes people do change their minds about turning. |
