A few days ago I watched this clip of San Francisco in the very early 1900s:

I noticed cars and horse & buggies cutting off other vehicles, pedestrians walking all over the place (excluding the ones who want to see the camera) and some vehicles driving the wrong way in the opposing lane. When did this all change? Was there any traffic laws in the days of horse and buggies? If not when did they start? Also I notice on the cars in the clip the steering wheel is on the right side. Why did they change this?

I think I saw that too - it was like the first piece of film ever - or something.
Traffic laws developed through the 20's as we got more cars and less horses on the streets.
Could be some cars had steering wheels on the "wrong" side because they were imported from Europe. As far as I know in the US, steering wheels were always on the left even early on. |
