p.s. did you know? the law cannot actually enforce speed restrictions of 20 miles per hour. it is merely a recommended speed to promote safety, usually around schools. you cannot get fined.

well god forbid some one you know being knocked down by a car then YOU will want not only people with red flags walking in front of cars but you will blame the whole world for driving too fast.
20 mph in city is a good idea but in my experience education of lazy pedestrians to walk a further 100 yards to the nearest crossing a better idea.

What has this got to do with "new labour"?

As far as I'm aware it is a cross party advisory group that has made the proposal.

Some residential areas in my town already have 20mph limit signs posted which considering the areas in question makes sense and I can find little to disagree with it and wouldn't thoroughly object to an expansion of this in residential areas.

I however would be concerned if the plan was to replace the normal 30mph limit on urban A and B roads with a 20mph limit.

If carried out, government could also blow away it's CO2 targets in one sweet breath as well. 20mph is not a very efficient speed for cars and other motor vehicles to be travelling, fuel consumption would increase significantly. In fact in the interests of efficiency they should be looking at making speeds closer to 40mph the default.

i totally understand where you are coming from, but after being caught speeding (36 in a 30 zone, country lane) i had to attend a speed awareness course. what i learned there has really opened my eyes and i rarely speed now. i agree with the 20 limit where there may be children in large numbers. also on housing estates where kids play out in the street. i really don't think i could cope if ever i hit a kid in my car. oh and i too clocked well over 20mph on my bike when i was young and fit lol.

Good question. I agree. It will not be long before yet more 'safety' cameras (tax cameras) are fitted to 20 mph streets so that the poor mug doing 22 mph will pay yet another Â£60. Roll on some sanity. Clear the decks the lunatics are taking over the asylum...
