When you see those yellow 'Accident here.on x date..' signs on a road does it mean?...?

...that someone has died. Or has someone been badly injured? Or is just for insurance purposes or is it for all of these reasons or none of them?

Why would you need witnesses to come forward? What determines whether you need witnesses or not? What if no-one was hurt? What if there was only a smashed light? What i am really asking what factor in particular calls for one of these signs because there are a lot more accidents than yellow signs!

i think these signs are stupid!
they obviously know that the road must be dangerous as they are saying there has been an accident and then they go and put a sign up which distracts the driver from the road!

These are signs are not dor minor crashes, insurance issues or borken tail light.

Thye are put to ask for witness's to come forward who may have seen a serious life altering or fatal collision. They will need as many witness's to come forward so Police Collision investigators can piece together what has happened. They are there when there are gaps in the investigation, one side cannot say what happened due to the tragic incident or they need to find the driver who caused it.

Its usually for a serious or fatal accident

It is because there has been a serious, maybe fatal, accident at that spot and witnesses are sought who might have seen it, or the events leading up to it. Often people see it and, even if they stop, go on their way again where there's enough help and nothing they can do. Their input as to what happened is still valuable, as they may be the only people who actually saw it.

It's not done for "minor" accidents, but usually where one of the parties is deceased and cannot put his/her side. It's to help the police accident investigators piece together what happened.

it is put there so passing folk can see it and respond with Information. it normally also has a telephone number on it to cal. It is in fact an appeal for information appertaining to an accident at that spot on that date.

WelshLad
An appeal for witnesses.

Could be for a hit and run.

TEL BOY
Purely an appeal by the police for witnesses

I think it's in case anyone saw it and could give any information as to what happened, like an appeal for witnesses.

Champagne suspended a 5th time.
Could have just been a minor collision but need witnesses to come forward.

Edit: If there is a minor collision and no one is accepting responsibility then for insurance claim purposes it has to go to a witness seeing who was at fault.

In most cases a driver will accept responsibility, therefore it's a straight forward insurance claim. thats why there are more accidents than signs.

spud.mark
the reason is if someone says it was not my fault then the police need witnesses.
