When you wipe out in a car with manual transmission. How do you keep it from turning off?
Find answers to your legal question.

When you wipe out in a car with manual transmission. How do you keep it from turning off?

In general, I put the clutch down as I hit the brakes. But I assume in the panic of wiping out it still turns off.

I love manual transmissions, but that is the only thing that really bother me about it. It is rather dangerous that your car would turn off in a situation like that. Power brakes don't work when the car is turned off... And can't get out of the way quickly.

I mean, I put the clutch down as I hit the brakes WITH the intention of stopping.

I don't do it every time I hit the brakes...Lol

I hope that you will soon learn that the panic that occurs when a car "wipes out" is NOT the vehicle's panic. It is the driver's.

I agree with the answer that experience will teach you to automatically press the clutch as you depress the brake in a "panic stop." The car's engine will not immediately die out the moment you hit the brakes. The car has to slow down enough to cause the engine to stall, and, even that's not, just, from one moment to the next. As long as the car's in gear, and still in motion, the engine will try to continue to run or, at least, reignite.

By the way, power brakes DO work with the engine off, but only the mechanical components, not the power assist parts. Same for power steering.

What worries me is the "suggestion," in your question, that you have experienced this more than a few times. Maybe I'm reading more into it than you intend, but I can only HOPE that you are not "wiping out" as often as your question indicates you do.

Are you fairly new at driving a manual? If so, with practice and experience you will instantly go for the clutch and brake at the same time if you are ever in that situation.

When I wipe out in any vehicle I usually shut the engine off while waiting for a wrecker to set me right again. That keeps the radio from playing backward for the first five minutes after changing the record. Oh yea! there is always enough reserve vacuum for at least one stop if you don't pump it away. Just hold the brake pedal with steady foot pressure instead.

clutch and down shift prevents stalling till you put car into neutral when stopped, or clutch in and foot on brake, not good but lots of people do it anyway
why are you wiping out, this is not normal in the course of every day driving.

I guess that is why automatic transmissions were invented.

Stay off the clutch until you are almost stopped. (or are changing gears)

If you're wiping out, why would you need the car to keep running?

A car that's still running won't go anywhere if it's in the ditch or wrapped around that tree.
