First thing, stay calm...
Without starting the engine, sit there and get your teenager(?) to move from the gas to the brake before even moving.
Choose a car park or similar and move off and stop and move off and stop. Do that without gas in the first 2 or 3 gears. If he/she can do it without gas tou can be sure that they understand clutch control perfectly...gas can be added after control!!
Another thing that is important is to teach pull/push steering. Just do figure of 8s steering at things in the distance, eg, steer left 90 degrees and then straighen up with a tree etc to get steering control.
Those 2 things will take an hour or so and you'll be exhausted after that, but most so-called instructors don't take the time out to perfect the basics in the UK so now you know how....
If they can drive a little, still do it, it's good practice at low speeds!

When you say your child. I am assuming they have a provisional licence.
I would try on a Sunday when the streets are normally emptier and see if you can find some nice quiet back streets to practice in, or maybe an industrial estate where all the businesses are closed for the weekend. Those would be best as the roads are wider and there are practically no other traffic and pedestrians. I don't live in London, but check your local maps and see if there are any industrial estates nearby and check them out next weekend.
If they don't have a provisional licence, the only place they can drive it is on private property. |
