Where does the law stand on using hand-held devices in your car?

I recently purchased an aux cable so I could listen to my mp3 player through my car stereo. I know there is some law about using hand held devices in the car. Does this mean it's legal to change track on the stereo but not on your mp3 player as that is a hand-held device?

If you live in the US, each state has different laws about hand helds. In general, don't think listening to your MP3s through your radio is illegal.

Its not illegal but it adds to your distraction during driving.

If you should be seen by a traffic policeman it would probably depend on his interpretation as to whether you were in proper control of your vehicle.
After all, there have been successful prosecutions for someone eating a sandwich while driving.

you must have total control at all times

Rapid Fire
Doesn't matter. The law in most jurisdictions clearly states that safe operation of a motor vehicle requires both hands to be on the steering wheel at all times. That law should supersede any law relating to hand held devices. And I don't understand why the Police do not enforce it more often.

a mobile phone has to be operated in a cradle.
handheld devices become a problem when you are distracted and end up shortening your car by two feet or your manner of driving is noted by the old bill, crossing white lines or clipping a few pedestrians, even though there is no shortage of them.
it does differ with tv's when they are in drivers sight, though not the likes of meter's in taxi's.

There is nothing to stop you touching a hand held device, you cannot actually hold it. So if it is in a cradle, you can operate it.

However:-

If there is an accident or other law infringement and you were touching the device at the time, you will be done with driving without due care and attention.

This would also apply if you are listening to an mp3 player via headphones at any time as you would not be able to hear a warning from another vehicle.

Letter of the Law is that MP3 is hand-held but not the point, Texting and foning is the objection.

The way I understand it is that you need to have a 'docking station' for your MP3 player or your phone so it's visible and you don't have to go rummaging around for it. Similarly with bluetooth sets and Sat Navs. Don't really understand it because like you said you still take your eyes off the road anyway in order to change tracks.
