The old Ford Pinto sedan would indeed sometimes blow-up if involved in a rear end collision. The problem was a bolt head on the rear axle housing would tear open the fuel tank if the body were crushed with sufficient force. Another Ford burn-mobile was the F150 trucks. The electrics on the steering column would overheat and melt, causing blazes -- many times while just sitting, unoccupied and not running. Late '80's Nissan Maximas burned with abandon as a result of poor fuel injection connections. Mitsubishi vans in the 80's and early '90's literally melted-down while being driven and burned to cinders by the hundreds. The problem was attributed to the underpowered engines overheating while trying to keep up with traffic on American roads. back in the '70's nearly every GM car that was equipped with a Rochester carburetor was subject to gas fire. The list goes on and on.......

The Pinto had a tendecncy to catch fire in rear-end collisions.

The Pontiac Fiero, produced from 1984-1989 had a problem with engine fires due to oil leakage.

It wasn't always catching fire but a few rear end crashes had ignited the fuel tank. I had trouble with a, now it would be ten of twelve old jeep. If the front tailpipe hanger broke it broke the exhaust manifold and burnt all the wiring twice before I found the cause.

could it be the PINTO from rear end crashes

The Ford Pinto. The gas tank would rupture when hit in the back.

maybe it was the pinto?

All of the early Ford trucks would catch on fire due to the fuel filter hose that had a 90 degree bend in it and the heat from the intake and exhaust manifold would cause the hose to crack and the gas would spill out and these trucks would always catch on fire.....
