Whichever one is driven by somebody who knows how to drive and knows enough to put proper tyres on. I have owned FWD and RWD, both have been excellent winter cars. I have driven AWD and 4WD as well. AWD will get you going a little faster in snow or on ice, but can't stop any faster, so dumb overconfident people put AWD and 4WD vehicles further in the ditch every winter. By the way, in rain, all of the difference is in the tyres and how they sluice the water away. In snow, summer touring tyres will get you off the road at the first snowflake, the rubber is too hard in the cold and the tread won't grip. So, instead of researching drive systems, research tyres, because they are of utmost importance no matter what wheels are driven. You only really need AWD or 4 WD if you live in the country where the roads aren't regularly plowed. |

I have to agree with Fred.
One more point.... I own one of each and it really doesn't make a difference to me which one I drive in any kind of weather. What it comes down to is this. Each type of drive system requires different techniques to safely get to your destination. RWD required a very light touch on the throttle, FWD gets better traction because of the weight over the drive wheels, but it also adds to that false sense of security. AWD, while being the best in all weather situations, will get you in trouble if you get the attitude that you are now "10' tall and Bulletproof". Like Fred said, AWD or 4WD will just put you into the snowbank further.
The trick is... Drive all of them with great respect and a light touch. Remember, it's better to get there late, than not at all!!

It all depends on the drivers skill. I have never owned a front wheel drive so I can't comment on them. I have had rear wheel drive and 4 wheel drive. The 4 wheel drive is by far the best in snow for traction but no better for braking. It's braking in slippery conditions that get most people in trouble. |
