There are over 40,000 deaths from motor vehicle accidents in the U.S. each year. Over 6,000 of them are drivers with less than a year's experience at driving.

Without a doubt car accidents kill more people. However, this is not a meaningful metric, as there are many more people who drive than people who participate in sanctioned racing.

A better question would be, what's the vehicular accident mortality rate for professional racers vs. the general public: are racers as a group more likely to die in automobile accidents than non-racres?

I can't give you the statistics for racers. You'll need to take into account deaths outside as well as on the track, IMO, as I imagine their driving habits are different outside the track too.

The US government has country-wide statistics on traffic accidents. The wiki page and stats pages below have some statistics. If you believe the numbers, then in the US in 2004 14 out of every 100,000 people alive died in an automobile accident in 2004, for a total of 42,636 deaths that year.
