A 7-way connector is required IF your trailer has electric brakes... if not, there's no point in installing a 7-pin connector on the vehicle end, since the trailer will have a different connector.
Here's the way the lights are set up on trailers:
Very basic trailers are 4-wire (common ground, left turn, right turn, running/tail lights).
Some have 5-wire (common ground, left, right, running/tail lights, brake lights)
6-wire systems have an extra circuit for electric brakes, aux lighting, etc.
7-wire systems are for larger trailers (common ground, left turn, right turn, electric brakes, brake lights, backup lights, running/tail lights)
Light trailers don't usually have separate brakes. In any case, the best thing is to decide on a trailer, determine what sort of wiring is required, and then install a compatible harness on the car.
You may want to check out http://www.accessconnect.com/trailer_wiring_diagram.htm for example wiring diagrams for various systems.
Hope this helps |
