both are impaired- so it's just a matter of degree.
The most dangerous driver is one who is unaware of what's going on around them, but both of these categories have elevated risk and statistically higher accidents. So- it's just a matter of degree.

My father, at 79, is still quite sharp and vibrant, and with his new lenses (he had cataracts) he can see 20/20. He exercises daily and is alert and quite capable. Although- maybe you wouldn't put him in the category of 'elderly'.

It has been studied, by many institutions. People who are busy with other things in their personal vehicles, ie; cellphones, changing radio stations, reading news papers, putting makeup on, ect..., besides paying attention to their surroundings, are the most dangerous drivers. So the answer to this question I would give, is this; If you are driving a SUV or pickup truck, and you are on a cellphone, you would be the most dangerous driver. With the exception, if you are elderly, using a cellphone, then it would be tie.

I would say mall mothers on cell phones seem to be the most distracted. I guess most of them are in SUVs and minivans.

Cell phone users who are driving at the same time. I have observed this time and again, most who are swerving, tailgaiting, and running lights/stop signs and the like have a cell phone glued to their head it seems and are often in mid conversation. Hands free sets are better, but still...

Terrible, but I now equate cell phone use while driving and drunk driving on the same level.

Elderly drivers are more dangerous because of there attention span. if one is talking on the phone also, that would be an impending disaster.

not all elderly drivers are doddery some are still sharp as a knife...and anyway what constitutes elderly...whereas all people driving and using phone cannot concentrate properly on two things (at least) that they are trying to do...survey after survey shows use of cellphone while driving is worse than drunk driving.
A very effective ad in the doctors showed two different coloured lines of writing to show how hard it was to read one without being distracted by the one beneath to replicate how the brain can not adequately function on the concentration required...simple solution take pics of the idiots on the phone their registration plats send to the police and demand more action against these brain dead self-important morons who risk our lives

While both are dangerous, I'd have to go for the elderly. Sure, there are exceptions to the rule on both sides, but I've seen far more fatal accidents involving the elderly than those using cell phones or driving large vehicles.
