Which tires would be best for winter-snow,ice, and rain?

there is a tire called a blizzack that is a stud less snow tire, but its only good below certain temperatures, and above a specific temperature it will melt away quickly, the standard kind of snow tire is usually an aggressive tread with studs, this works great in snow ice mud sand dirt wet, dry pavement, what ever, this was a mild year, you may find a killer deal on snow tires, check www.tirerack.com and see what they have in stock, you can actually buy tires with the holes for studs, but are not studded yet, If you have not done the winter tire thing, It is cost effective and cheaper to buy a generic rim that will fit have tire rack mount and stud your pick of tires, you may have only one or two options for studs but the tires are heavy duty anyhow. you then have to put the rims and tires on for summer, and then switch them for the winter.

Get yourself a set of actual snow tires and have studs installed, any reputable tire dealer can do this job. After your tires are installed buy yourself some bags of sand as weight, and place the bags over the rear axle that way you have traction through snow and ice.

I too live in the Chicago-land area.
I use Bridgestone Blizzaks. Purchased mine mounted on rims with hubcaps from The Tire Rack out of South Bend, IN.
Best tires for winter driving conditions. I have used them for the last 13 years. Difference in traction is amazing. Improves traction, braking, and handling in snowy and icy conditions. I recommend them to everyone. Consider if you have a $500 insurance deductible. Tires will run about $500 with rims. You don't need the tire pressure monitoring valves. Cost of the TPMS's is insane. About $300. If the tires prevent just one accident, they will have paid for themselves. I will never drive again without a set of winter snow and ice tires on the car.

Look for an actual tire meant for snow thats nice and soft. For a tad extra you can but studs too but you can just look for tires that alreDy have studs on them. Craigslist is a great place to get tire for cheap. I bought a set for 200 dollars that came with rims and studs. They were only used for one season so they were pretty much brand new. Now the time too to look for them being summer you should find some good deals. Local tire shops are the place to go though for more info. Oh and dont put sand bags in your car if its front wheel drive cause you will just spin out more. I dont know if the hhr is front or rear
