toward the curb so that the curb will help the car rest on the edge of the sidewalk in case of brake failure.

yup towards the curb so you hit the curb and stop... this way you dont roll all the way down hill or into traffic.

Toward the curb or side of the road. In case it slips out of gear or the parking pin breaks in the transmission. The best way to do it is to stop where you want to park, turn the wheel all the way toward the curb, and then let the vehicle move ahead until the tire just touches, then shift into park (or reverse if a standard) then apply the parking brake. This will ease the stress on the transmission.
