While driving my drive shaft fell clean off at 60km.hr.?

I was driving down pavement when it happend. It is a 4x4 95 f150 short box... the rear drive shaft was the one that fell off. its only about 1 meter and a quarter long and the yoke fell with it... my truck was in 3wd when this happen.... the drive shaft is solid steel and had only a couple scufffs but looked good. still had the balancing weights as usuall... would the drive shaft still be good to put back on.??? what about the yoke??

Obviously there has to be a fault in th transmission for it to come apart. I don't know the vehicle but check all the mountings in the area to see they are all solid. Then check everything else for play etc. Last one I did was front drive shaft and that was due to owner not noticing engine mount had collapsed allowing the engine to roll and drive shaft coupling popped out. |

It should be O.K. How was your truck in 3wd? Never heard of 3wd. |

should only be the universal joint. the drive shaft should be fine unless you kept driving and damaged the shaft. |

As long as it didn't get warped at all. You will probably need new union couplings to replace the shaft. This happened to me in an old Dodge van back in the day. |

Just a guess, but is the truck jacked up? When people put lift kits on those trucks, they hardly ever comensate for suspension travel. The splines of the front part of the shaft slip over the splines on the tail shaft of the tranny. When the truck is subject to even slight height changes while driving, sometimes even unnoticeable changes, the travel from the rear suspension acts upon the shaft, and it's travel excursion is lengthened, causing the yolk to travel along with it. Say, for instance, your truck goes over a slight dip in the road. It's not the force of the truck going down on the suspension that's bad. It's the reacting travel back upwards that is prone to seperate the yolk from the tranny. Also, the drive shaft is not solid steel, it is actually hollow, just very rigid. Yes, get it checked, and also have them give your suspension a good lookover. Hope this helps. |

Yes it would be fine i think. |

Yes and no..........you still need to have the shaft checked and rebalanced to be on the safe side. |
