call 911 and tell the operator your,situation and they'll advise you what to do next. don't put yourself in harms way ! stay in vehicle unless your in imminent danger for fire or explosion leaking gas ! wait for police to arrive ! or emergency help !

if your car is badly damaged that it is stuck in the lanes then you need to call the police so they can secure the scene. you don't want anybody hitting you @ 70 + mph from behind right? If its a hit and run, pull over then call the police 911 should be fine.

Call your insurance company first if it's a non emergency and they'll help you out. Otherwise, I've called 311 the non-emergency police number and they've been good to me.

Since the only legal reason to stop and park a car on the freeway, by definition, if your car is not driveable off of the freeway, it IS an emergency situation.

In California, the highway patrol authorizes certain tow companies to move a disabled vehicle off of the freeway. If you contact them via a cell phone 911 call, they MAY allow you to use your AAA roadside service, or they may contact their own contractor. But if it is just a stall, you can, certainly call your own tow service.

In your particular situation, if you can move the car off of the traffic lane, to the shoulder, you are required to do so. You are not allowed to obstuct traffic by leaving the car on the road. Pull over if it is safe to do so and call 911. Try to get a witness, if possible, to pull over and get their information as well. This could REALLY help in a hit and run situation.

Any accident on the Interstate is an emergency. Move your vehicle to the side if you are able and call 911 (or local police number). Once you are stopped turn on your emergency flashers and kill your engine. If you are uninjured try to put a wall or guardrail between yourself and traffic. I hope this helps.

911 is perfect. Unless there is considerable property damage or a life is at stake, the cops will not arrive immediately, so brace yourself for a long wait.

Exchange insurance information. Call your insurance company if you think that the accident looks bad.

Once all of that is done, you will still have to visit the DMV in person and report the accident. THAT IS A MUST, NO EXCEPTIONS -- Dont try to rationalize in your attempt to avoid going to the DMV.

If you do not report the accident in person and per chance you miss the notification sent to you by DMV asking you to show yourself, at the very minimum you could be slapped with a misdemeanor, if not a felony.
