Who has right of way on freeway?

Who has right of way on freeway?

Earlier today as I was entering the freeway from a feeder/access rd. this girl would not let me on! As I approached to merge on this person honked at me and gave me a dirty look, to which I "mouthed" the words, "gimme some room"! So she thought it necessary to give me her middle finger.
I had my blinker on and in no hurry. She had PLENTY of room and time to either slow down (she was already positioned behind me as I was entering )and let me on or change to the middle lane. Instead she insisted to be were I was and acted like I should slow down or stop for her so she could continue in front of me. Apparently she was going to use the upcoming exit and didn't want any one in her way. Then she whipped like a freakin' road rage psycho in front of me an put on her brakes! As if to say, she was going to have her way. So, I blazed around her dumb *** to the fast lane and didn't look back.
Who has the right of way? Person getting on or person already on? I would think it's a common courtesy kind of thing to allow people to merge in. You can't miss me coming up or down the road! Soccer mom in big black SUV -v- 300lb. chick in tiny wht. compact car. Hmmm, who would win?

Okay, 1st of all, I live in S.Tx. The drivers here are very rude and it's always me,me,me,me,me first. 2ndly, as I stated before, I was entering the freeway and she would have been positioned behind me on the freeway. Plenty of room for me to enter. I expected no problems entering. The timing seemed appropriate. She just wanted me to stop or slow down for her so she could get in front of me to make the upcoming exit which was a 1/4 ml down the road. 3rdly, my kids were not with me. If they were they would've seen a nasty rude cow flipping their mother off, not me setting a bad example as I was just getting on the freeway minding my own business. I had to whip around her to avoid hitting her from behind. I think some of you may have assumed incorrectly my driving intentions, which was defensive not immature. You cannot honk and flip people off on the road b/c you don't get your way. And you cannot stop on an entrance ramp either.

Yeah, some people don't realize it's the law to let you in when a lane is merging and you have your signal in. Even if you are just trying to change lanes further down the road, if you are signaling to move over, it is the duty of the people in the next lane to make room for you. It's the law. People are just in such a hurry now a days that they think they will get to where they are going faster by not letting one person in front of them. You were in the right and the other person has to live their life as a moron so don't worry about it too much.
And to those who say she should have yielded, That means if there is traffic moving on the freeway, she should have to stop at the bottom of the on ramp and wait till there is a clearing? I don't think so. Man there are more idiots out there driving than I thought. And to think they are here giving advice scares me. Ask any cop in any state. If there isn't enough room between your car and the car in front of you for some one to merge in at highway speeds, you are tailgating and will be ticketed.

Traffic already on the highway has the right of way; however seeing that you were approaching to merge, and depending on whether it was safe for her to do so, she could have switched to the middle lane out of sheer courtesy.

Not to brag-if there's traffic coming off the accel. lane and if I'm in the right lane and it's safe for me to do so, I'll change to the left lane to let that person merge safely. No big deal.

I've been on the acceleration lane, aware of right-of-way traffic, however it never fails: just when I'm at the edge of the acceleration lane and on the highway, some idiot who's been sitting in the left lane for miles because I've seen him way back, suddenly decides that's when he'll switch lanes to get in front of me-and he doesn't get off at the next exit.

If that's not being rude, I don't know what is.

She had the right of way, and you should have held back enough to merge. Sure, it's common courtesy to let someone in, but it's not required.

Both of you were acting like 6-year-olds from the sound of it.

It depends on where you are from because in some states the people on the highway must yield to oncoming traffic from the feeder road and in many other states you must yield to the highway traffic.......

Paul
People already ON the fwy should NOT have to slow down for you unless there are so many cars that there is no place for you to enter.

When there is plenty of room, it is UP TO YOU to either speed up or slow down as needed to get in there.

Different states have different rules- (something about states rights) In Calif you would have the right of way, in Az you would have to find the opening.

See how simple "Road rage" gets started. All it would take at the very beginning was for one of you to let off the full throttle. Instead your ready to commit manslaughter over getting on the freeway- which should be a daily "nobrainer".

There is no excuse for such rude behavior. Lots of causes-no excuse.
She should have moved over -way before you were even close. Maybe she was texting.

The person on the highway has the right of way, period. That said you do have the responsibility to not hit those merging on the freeway.
You didn't say if there was a lot of traffic behind her for you to merge in after you slowed down to get behind her . You did say you were'nt in a hurry so why get mad and drive badly.
Talking about road rage I suggest you should read your question over again , you sound like you think that you should be given the right of way just because your vehicle is bigger?? It also sounds as if you recklessly passed her after you did get on??
You should have either sped up on the on ramp to get ahead of her as you could see far enough ahead OR slowed down as to not interfere with the flow of the traffic.Which is the purpose of the on ramp to begin with , not to difficult if you have a real licence.
Your patience is required as a driver and as a mom to protect your cargo { you and the children } and you would have done the same thing if you were getting off at the next ramp. Changing lanes to let someone on when you are positioned to get off is irresponsible and reckless as you can't just swing back and forth across the lanes as you need in the traffic.
Please don't be mad at me but read your question first?
Thanks.

through traffic always has the right of way... in a few states they require you to give way if you have room, but ultimately the person on the road has the right of way.

Jayson
you can stop on a ramp...thats the point of YEILD
