Who has the right of way on a green light?
|
If the light is green both ways, and there is a person turning right from one direction and a person turning left from the other direction, who has the right of way? They are turning onto a two-lane road so both could choose the lane closest to them, but I've always learned that the person turning right has the right of way regardless of how many lanes there are to turn into. In other words, the person turning right could choose to turn into the lane farthest from them and have every right to do so and the person turning left would have to yield to them. Yes? No?

The person turning right has the right of way, and should stay to the right as they turn. You should not turn into the leftmost lane.
Why? 2 reasons. Not everyone respects "right of way", and changing lanes in an intersection is illegal. Technically, if you turn into the leftmost lane, you changed lanes. |

No matter what, even at a stop sign, the person turning right has the right of way over the person turning left. |

yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
If you are turning left, you wait for the right-turning vehicle no matter how many lanes there are.
It's just too dang dangerous to have people turning onto the same street at the same time from different directions.
The other guy is right, though, you should turn into the lane closest to you.
Remember, "right of way" does not exist until it is yielded. |

Yielding is always to the right. Whoever is on the right, turning right, etc has the right-of-way over vehicles turning left onto the same road. If the road you both are turning onto has multiple lanes, then you are to turn into he lane nearest you. |

The person turning right has the right of way. The reason is that they do not have to cross any other paths of oncoming vehicles. The left turn has to yield to oncoming vehicles going straight and turning right. This is assuming they both have a green light, of course.
The one that gets me though is when a car turns right in front of a car making a U-turn from the other street on a green light. The right turner assumes that if they look to their left and cars are stopped, they can go. No you can't, if that U-turner had a green light! Ugh! |

From the police point of view and if there is a crash, both units are able to make their turn and must stay in their respective lanes if turning on to a two lane roadway. The problem is proving encroachment. Typically both parties will claim that the other car came into their lane. They only solution is if there are unbiased witnesses to prove one side over the other. Again, best advice is to drive defensively and allow whoever got there first to complete their turn. |
