Nothing to do with the motor car. The sidewalk was a street dance but people kept getting knocked down by horse and carriage so they made a long flat bit along the road to dance the sidewalk and the name eventually meant a thin paved area. lining a road.

I think they just evolved, people move aside for bigger things.

Yes, it was the Romans. I saw that on a documentary T.V. program.

There may be older examples, but they have not been discovered, or don't exist today.

Where I come from, the word pavement refers to streets. British call sidewalks pavements.

oh no,,,it's the kevsta
was it the bloke who carried the red flag
probably sick of getting run over

Used by Egyptians to embalm mummies, as well as make roads. No one can be certain who invented it for sure, not even what group of people.

So in other words, it came long before the car.

I think it was just a kind of idea among many of the richer class when they were tired of getting stuck in the mud.

it was a combination of things.

first they used planks of wood over the more muddier areas, then came cobblestone and other flagstone first used in driveways and private roads, then on main highways

This paragraph is copied from the link below which about the history of the road.
The increase in motorised traffic prompted the need for stronger road surfacing materials and experiments started on the Bay Road (later Anzac Highway) in 1918. Tests of woodblocks, cement concrete, tar paving and asphaltic concrete were tried. Asphaltic concrete proved to be most durable and had an all weather surface. However, it was expensive to lay as suitable mixing and laying equipment was unavailable. Eventually in 1923 the first bituminous concrete plant was imported from the United States and used to resurface a length of the Main North Road.

Someone with the initials N.B. as most of them have this stamped in the corner, or they used to.
