Who should I report a pot hole in the road to?

There is a rather large pot hole in the road near where I live, who should I contact to get it repaired? I am guessing my local council?

In England your County Council is normally the highway authority and you should report it to them, however trunk roads are maintained by the highways agency and further to complicate things the county often gives the responsibility and money to local borough and district councils to look after the highways on their behalf. There are also some private roads that are looked after by the housing authority these are normally just oddments on council estates. Confused yes this is part of the case for unitory authorities so the public only have to contact one place. Anyhow even if you contact the wrong one any decent local authority should still take all the deatils and get the report to the right place for you. |

It depends where you live. In England, report it to your local borough council, if a minor road and county council, if a major road. If you live in London, report it to your London Borough, not the GLA. If you live in an area covered by a unitary authority, report if to them. |

Your local council is supposed to do, but it will be quicker if you do it yourself.
Seriously, we have been asking the local council to fill in the pot holes in our road for the last 20 YEARS. |

If you live anywhere near me the council will show no interest whatsoever. There is one ploy you can try and that is to tell them that you have had an accident at the location and are about to contact a solicitor with a claim for compensation. If that doesn't work I then suggest you do actually have an accident, if you know what I mean! |
