Why are UK drivers using their indicators less and less over time?

I've noticed this. First they put them on and then they turn them off, Then they put them on, then they turn them off. perhaps they are worried about wearing them out!

I think its a sign of a general lack of thought about their own driving and what would be helpful to other road users.

Moving a finger or two a couple of inches away from the steering wheel can hardly be that much of a challenge can it? In fact.. you could call it extra exercise, so it should be good for you!

Ok, I'm old-fashioned, but as a driver, a cyclist and a motorcyclist, I find it helpful when people indicate... so I'm keen to indicate myself.

Because people like to break the law.

After you pass your test people begin to forget what they are supposed to do when driving.

I believe that every driver should have to retake the theory test every 5 years; to remind them of the highway code.

Worse when you're on a roundabout and you have to guess which way the car's are going, no indication when turning off, or on motorway and no indication when overtaking, really bad driving and most cause of accident's.

They just do not think about it. It is the last thing on their minds they are too busy eating, reading, talking on their cell phones, or yelling at the kids.
But is not just in the UK it is every where.
I live in Florida US and I see it all the time. I use mine 95% of the time. If I am distracted by something else and do not use them my children immediately call my attention to it by saying "Improper lain change. That's a ticket for you mom". It gets me every time.

pure laziness....especially on roundabouts! It's about time there was a crackdown as you have to be a mind reader just to guess what they are going to do!

They probably think that it makes them look professional and they know where they are going. What they don't know though is how amateurish they look by not yet having figured out what the small lever on the Left of the steering column is for.

Mainly down to laziness and/or poor driving skills.

It's as bad as motorists who think that once they put their indicator on to change lanes that they have the right - They don't, you are signalling your intention, it doesn't mean you have the automatic right to pull out.

There is a definate falling standard of driving in the UK and it seems to be getting worse and worse, people won't move back into the inside lane on the motorway as there is a vehicle within their line of sight that they'll have to overtake within 20 minutes so they best not move back in!

I have also noticed a great number of people who seem to think that speed limits can average out, so if you do 40 in a 50 then it's OK to do 40 in a 30 cause overall it pans out! It's very frustrating on the way into work everyday where I get stuck behind someone who won't do 60mph on the perfectly open road where it's safe to do so, but as soon as they get to a section that is 30mph they fly off (Until they see a speed camera in which case they slam on their brakes!).

Of course people who drive towards a speed camera and then slow down excessively (eg 10 mph or more below the limit) because the speed camera is there are annoying - If the speed limit is 50 then the camera won't go off if you are doing 50!

I prefer not too particularly on the motorway, because people try and block you off in order to hog their bit of space, It is the people that don't at roundabouts that really annoy though because you sit there waiting for them and they turn off before they get to you.

It's simply a decline in driving standards plus an unfortunate decline in traffic-police presence.
I don't think some people have as much pride in the standard of their driving as was the case in the past.

I dont know, but it needs to be sorted out. My mother lives in Florida and driving there is so scary- no one indicates. EVER. I don't want it to be like that here too, it makes driving really stressful. I never understood why they don't enforce traffic violations more, people die on the road every single day...

I do it sometimes especially if the road markings are directing me to take a turn.

However my partner never does he says he is saving on bulbs?????

Because some dimwit drivers think that just because they turn off automatically they must turn on automatically,doh.

I have witnessed a driving instructor turn a corner without indicating, without his belt on, whilst on a mobile phone.

Good question, Thumbs up. As a pedestrian I've noticed this more and more over time at ambiguous junctions and roundabouts when I've been waiting to cross. Do they not know this is dangerous and disrespectful to other users of the Queen's Highway? Even the occasional copper (not all I must stress, generally they are good drivers)
Please remember what that little orange light is for.

Because they are busy on their mobiles, or they are policemen.

Because it is just a big elaborate prank that people are pulling on you. Next month we are going to all start using the indicator for the wrong direction.
