Why are bald tires not like racing slick tires?
Find answers to your legal question.

Why are bald tires not like racing slick tires?

Why are racing tires slick with no tread for more traction and grip, but regular tires have tread for grip? This is confusing because when regular tires with tread go bald they don't grip. Instead, shouldn't they have more surface area on the road and grip more, like racing slicks? Obviously I'm not talking about off road tires or snow tires.

Racing slicks use a softer rubber (R Compound) that gets sticky when it heats up. That's why dragsters do a burn-out prior to their runs. Regular road tires use a harder rubber and are dangerous once the tread wears down.

On dry, clean race tracks, tires without tread grab better. In all other conditions, especially if their is rain, snow, ice, dirt, leaves, or anything else in the road, tires with tread grab better. The water, or whatever, is forced into the grooves of treaded tires, so the rubber between the grooves makes contact with the road. Untreaded tires would ride on top of the water, so there would be no surface area in contact with the road.

It's not just the tire but also the road surface. race tracks are incredibly smooth and racing 'slicks' are made from a very soft, gooey compound -- not worn-out street tires.

Marc
The compound that slicks are made from is different than conventional tires. They are also designed differently. Bald tires are just on the edge of coming apart from wear.

different compunds and stick you to the road
while bald radials is like driving with ice tires..lol

Slicks are made from different materials.

people are idiots
Racing slicks have a different compound that's more sticky than regular tires. When your regular tires go bald, you wear off the compound that gives you traction, hence they don't grip.

less rubber for one slicks made for only one thing a smooth dry surface not turnning or stoping they are used only a few times and replace as street tires roads rough wet covered in oil and other stuff

because a race car (aka a Nascar car) is built to have extreme "ground force". The way the car is built, it is designed to hug the surface. Your average Honda Civic, is not.
