Why are cars made to go 70mph over the speed limit?

I don't know if im the only 1 worring bout this....the only ppl /w the right 2 go over the speed limit should b police/race cars/ambulence/fire truck.Other wise you should go no higher then a speed of 70pmh.. I know if you go that fast you it can be bad 4 your engine..but it doesn't matter..shouldn't saftey be first everywhere?

Cars are made to go over the speed limit because, what if the speed limit changed and that would mean everyone would have to buy a new car. OR Because some places have no speed limit.

Some excuses are what if you were in an emergency and you had to go over the speed limit? Then you would be really mad.

Safety should come first. I hope I helped!

It should, but it isn't because safe is not fun.

Because there are some sane places on this planet where that is perfectly OK.
When some years ago I spent some time in Germany, where there are no speed limits, I realized how asinine the USA speed laws really are!!!
I felt perfectly fine doing 135mph which was as fast as the BMW I drove could go. It is because German highways (Autobahn) has no speed limit, that their cars are as good as they are. If we had been smart enough to do the same, our car industry wouldn't be almost bankrupt, and we too would be building worthwhile cars.
With no speed limit, you HAVE to build good cars, or you would lose all your customers since they won't accept having their cars in the garage more than on the street.
Also, if everyone drives twice as fast on average as we do now, you would only have half the cars on the road at any time, since the time on the road would be cut into half.
That's why whenever I see someone clueless ask questions like the present one, I really get steamed. Learn first what you are talking about before making statements lacking any type of understanding.

the "official" explanation is for safety/emergency issues/passing concerns. Lets say you live in the country. You are 45 minutes from the nearest hospital, at 60MPH. Your brother has a heart attack. Are you going to wait 1 hr, 30 minutes for an ambulance to get there, to your house, and BACK to the hospital, or are you going to stick him in your car, and get there in 30 minutes?

Technically, police, ambulance, fire trucks, and race cars don't have that right, either.

The difference is, race cars are on an enclosed track, and police, ambulance, and fire trucks aren't "penalized" for it.

Also, the speed limit isn't 70 everywhere. There are parts of -THIS- country (the us of a) that have speed limits at "whatever is reasonable" I kid you not.

Your argument is also the same argument as to why ANYONE needs an 8 cylinder, let alone a 6 cylinder engine. My 4 cylinder, 1.9 Liter, 45+ mpg diesel does 120+ mph. (I know first hand) and it has a measly 90 horse power, and 115 lb-ft of torque. Why then, is a company like toyota coming out with a 400 HORSEPOWER hybrid? Why does the toyota camry [which, by all stretches of the imagination, is a "family car" have 268 horsepower? WHAT's the need for it?]

Because people like fast cars.

Chevrolet has a governor on some of their trucks that prevent the car from going over 80mph [and 90mph on some of the larger engined models]

That sounds like al queda thinking. Make everything deemed illegal impossible.

People have the choice. There are actually times when breaking the speed limit is a good thing. Your wife is pregnant and about to give birth. Your father just had a heart attack and needs to get to the hospital...etc.

you are living in a world where men love speed and horsepowers. they use it on the race track for high speed thrill. car manufacture know men don"t buy that goes up to 70 mph. this will cause manufacture to go out of business. do you know how many congress, police, fbi, sheriff etc. that own fast, muscle vehicles out there? millions not counting there kids. i drove my Porshe up to 135 mph on weekend at the race track and it takes away my stress

ikabod_69
the reason is because in some contries it is legal to go faster. That is why the usa has began puting govenors on us cars.

bluff mike
70 isn't the maximum allowable speed in the US.

Freedom to do as we choose, and most cars have limiters that restrict your speed to 90mph. You need to go faster then 70 in some states the limit is higher, and when passing or emergency situations when speed will get you out of danger is important.

they should go that fast so that people can street race or race on the track

Oh no!!! The Beginning of the End right here.... my love of sportscars, may as well be over. lol Just kidding.

Well, that's a good point, and I've actually wondered that myself. However, I do know that when I get behind a granny that is doing half the speed limit, and I have only a certain amount of time to pass, I'm glad for the extra speed that my vehicle can give me. It makes me feel safer. If it had a lot less power, I would be stuck doing 34 in a 70! Or 25 in a 40!

Because faster is usually better, but also if you make it run just at the speed limit when you go the car will start to mess up, and weird noises will be heard.
You know we go faster so we're better, but people are stupid sometiems so i dk.

Definitely agreed! I don't know why car makers do that. But I think they just want to show off. It's a risky thing, but hey, they make a lot of profit.

Betsy
I agree. Unfortunately, I'm told even fire engines and ambulances are not legally allowed to speed.
