Why are cars not installed with speed limiters?

buses are fitted with speed limiters (Not sure of the name of this device, (tachometer?) to stop them from going too fast. A lot of people are fined for driving too fast. Surely a lot of money would be saved if the cars were fitted with the devices, and it would be a good safety measure too. Most cars can go up to 120 MPH/200 KPH.
The average driver would have no need to go so fast.

Imagine trying to overtake a car travelling at, say, 55 mph on an open road. If your car prevented you from going any faster than the limit (60mph), you'd effectively be overtaking at 5mph...VERY DANGEROUS.(Or would you ban overtaking as well?)If someone came in the opposite direction it could be disastrous. The speed limits on our roads are much too low.

A number of cars are fitted with speed limiters, you set the speed you require to be limited to, generally with a lever on the steering column. Should you require to go faster, say in an emergency, you press down the accelerator pedal quickly and the limiter disengages automatically. "Tachometer's"only record speed and time of driving. |

You know I have no idea, but all I will say is that the government makes a fortune every year from speeding tickets and so would not be in a hurry to eliminate this source of revenue. |

Whats the point of buying a Corvette if it can only be programmed to go 80MPH? If the govt liked your idea of putting a governor in all new cars/trucks..I would move to another country. |

Because we live in a free country, with freedom of choice.
You obviously don't like that idea, do you? |

Just because you don't like cars does not mean other people have to be like you. Buses are not fitted with limiters, watch one going up a motorway to a repair depot. Are you aware of how many different limits the are on the roads in any one country? If every one drove at exactly the same speed you would many accidents. Have you heard a train stop? Bang bang bang, as one carriage shunts into the one in front. Get a life. |

Speed limiters would not be a good safety measure - mile per mile, high speed roads anywhere in the world are safer than rural or urban roads. If you limit cars to, say, 70mph, wht use is that if someone wnats to drive that car at 80mph past a school in a 20mph zone?
Speed is not the danger it's made out to be - accidents are caused in the main by poor driving at any speed & drink or drug influenced driving.
In response to other answers, German manufacturers have a 'gentleman's agreement' to restrict their cars to 155mph, and even then, there are very few incidents on the autobahns.
Other than this, no European cars are speed limited.
Additionally, a speed limiter is called just that: A tachometer is a rev counter, and a tachograph is the device installed in LGVs to record time, speed & distance. |

So we should all be forced to drive your idea of what a car should be? Thanks but no thanks. We don't need more safety nazis out there. |

When they want to limit me, I shall leave the country. I won't be alone. Can someone get the lights? |

If all cars were fitted with regulators then the government would not have fines as a form of income, therefore taxes would go up.
I don't see why those who stick to the limit should pay for those who don't. Let them pay. |

The Mercedes-Benz CL class is limited to 155. But thats only because mercedes are sensible and know what there car is capable of. They know that it can go 200 mph, but it will start falling apart. |

because people like do other things like going to track and some highways in america do go up to 80mph
there is no need to have speed limiter 90 percent of the time
the European cars that do so they satisfy Germany's laws and autobahn regulations |

I agree that something does need to be done and there are some cars that are regulated to only go a certain speed but if you think about it you know that this would cut into the city, state and governments profits and the automakers would never do this because speed sells cars. |

a lot of cars have speed regulators that actually shut the car off most are around 100 mph. and that is reasonable considering speed needed for passing. texas freee way limit is like 75mph so passing someone safley you would need to go like 85-90. and a lot of speeders speed in like 25 mph zones doing 35 for example. you cant limit a car that slow because of freewayu driving |
