Why are our children in school buses forced to ride without seatbelts?

Our bus driver will not leave the bus stop until everyone is bucked. They need to raise their hand when they put their seatbelt on.

because there have been studies that show that it is actually safer not to be in one because they are only lap belts. lap belts have been shown to cause people to be pluralized in an accident because only you but is held in place but you upper body and legs go forward and that cause the spin to break. I rode a bus to school and in all that time we were in 3 accidents non of them going over 10 miles an hour and most of us did not know we had been in an accident.
also kids sitting in a bus are not paying attention to what is going on around them they are paying attention to there friends so when they are in a major accident the are relaxed because they don't expect it, and they are less likely to be hurt, just like drunks are almost never hurt in an accident because they are relaxed. so it is actually safer to not have them, when i have kids i will tell them not to use the on a school bus because i would rather them come home with a few cuts and bruises then be handy caped for the rest of there lives

Bus manufacturers were not REQUIRED to install seat belts until recently.

Forced?? Who is doing the forcing?? Maybe the parent who puts them on the bus, because it would interfere with his/her work schedule to drive the child??
Not all states have busses w/out seatbelts. My daughter's bus has belts, and harnesses for shorter kids, and my sons bus has belts.
This may not even be a federal Govt. issue, as it may be that people who want he seatbelts need to speak up at town/city meetings and be heard.

you know Ive seen questions simular to this and i agree with you 100 % all the way ,why in the world would we the safety country have are precis's cargo with out some sort of belt protection makes absolutely no sense , but if some government official lost their child in a bus crash God forbid this, you would see belts on em but they go to privet schools in limos so we still lose on this one GREAT QUESTION take care in all you ever do !!

The fact that busses are built like tanks means that they won't decelerate as quickly in an accident. Their mass forms a part of the whole safety concept. Personally, I think we should just get rid of them and make parents take their kids to school so we don't have to hear people crying about how their stupid little angels should be even more safe while unloading their transportation problems on taxpayers.

There are some school buses that have seat belts, but you are right most do not. The reason is because the seats are designed to protect the kids in case of an accident. I don't know what the statistics are but I believe there are very few serious injuries of children involved in accidents on school buses and I would guess that of those that do have serious injuries a majority were not sitting in the seats properly. I think your children are pretty safe.

ive asked myself that same question.and i dont have the answer. it would make sense to have them as you do in cars etc.

i think because the bus drivers think that since the seats are very tall they will protect them if they have an accident

The government requires that all new buses by equipped with seat belt. If your school disctrict is not retrofitting the older buses in the fleet you should gather a group of parents who are also upset and storm the school board meeting to demand they be installed.

Most responsible school districts have retrofitted older buses and demanded that sub-contracted companies do the same.
