Why are people so against the seat belt laws?

Why are people so against the seat belt laws?

They say "It's my car and I should be able to do what I want inside". (Within reason of course)

I <3 my Suby.
I know they save lives and I always wear mine. But It only effects me and if I were to choose to not wear it while driving alone, it should be my choice. The cops should NOT have the right to take money from me for that decision. If others were in the car with me and I pose a danger to them I can see the point. It's all about the money so that's why I'm against it. People who just go along with it are the brain dead ones.

Because they are braindead.

If you have EVER been involved in any car crash of any sort, the first thing you do when you get in a car is put your belt on.

People who wear belts are still killed but it reduces the risk.

Fine, your car, your choice, but you live with the choices you make, If the choice was die or have some injuires then be normal again, I know what choice most would take.

The problem being that what they do, when unrestrained by a seat belt, in an emergency maneuver can endanger those riding with them or in the cars around them. No one wants to have to perform an emergency maneuver but it, sometimes, becomes necessary. If you're being thrown all over the car, then your ability to control the car is nil.

I do not think people are against seat belt laws.

I think the greater majority of people know that seat belts save lives and help prevent or minimize injuries.

For some reason people think that the seat belt is not cool
but seat belts save lives.

Been there before
They are just standing up for their "rights" to be killed or maimed in the event of a crash.
Seatbelts save lives.
Proven over and over again.
It is not "within reason" to deliberately choose to ignore proven safety gear.
The government has the right to make the law, as they are paying for the hospitals and sickness benefits etc the person will need when they do crash. Every serious injury removes that person (and often a family member to care for them) from the economy, and costs the community as a whole billions each year. Every injured person robs a sick one of a hospital bed, too.
Some people feel they are indestructible or it can't happen to them. So they feel tough if they don't wear a belt.

Racing car drivers have no worries about wearing them.

There are plenty of laws about health and safety within your own home, too. The same people don't insist on their "rights" to cook at a campfire in a highrise living room, make up their own electric wiring system or keep venomous snakes as pets. The car somehow brings out the tough guys and idiots.

Even though they are a proven life saver, people should have the choice to decide for themselves, not have the gov't make that choice for them. And even though I have worked in law enforcement & a former EMT, I agree. If people want to risk their lives by not wearing a seat belt, then that's their choice. Same goes for motorcycle helmets. Just have the insurance companies adjust the premiums of people who do not want to wear a seat belt just as they do for medical ins for smokers vs non-smokers.

Because the govt. has no right to tell me what I am going to do in private property!

^^ Yes it does, you can't murder people in your house because you're on "private property". Especially when you're traveling on PUBLIC roads.

Anyways, people are stupid. The End.

[Edit: The reason why seat belt laws exist are because of insurance companies. If you get seriously injured in a car accident because you're not wearing a seatbelt an insurance company has to pay more out. Insurance companies got in bed with law makers and made it a law.

I agree with the spirit of the law. While I don't mind people dying as a result of their own stupidity it's better for the government to actually look out for its citizens instead of letting their stupidity get the best of them.

Most of them think that the government should have no right to tell them what to do in their own vehicle. What they don't realize is that those laws aren't there so the government can control us more. The insurance industry lobbied to get those laws passed.

You see, people who refuse to wear seat belts cause our insurance premiums to be higher. If someone has an accident, and they aren't wearing their seat belt, their injuries are almost always more severe (meaning bigger medical bills) than they would be had they been wearing one. In fact, many insurance companies will give you a significant discount if your car is equipped with automatic shoulder straps.
